Dr. Gabriel Servera-Vives (Marie Curie-Skłodowska Fellow)

I am the MSCA fellow of OLEA-project at the Laboratorio di Palinologia e Paleobotanica (Life Sciences Dept of UNIMORE). My research career has been focused on socio-environmental interactions during the Holocene in the context of national and international projects carried out in island and continental areas of Spain and France. I obtained the graduate in History in the University of Barcelona in 2006. I started my training in palynology (SERP-UB) during the preparation of my Master Thesis about the archaeopalynological study of the funerary cave of Cova des Pas (2009). I carried out my PhD with a European co-tutorship between the University of Limoges (GEOLAB, CNRS, UMR-6042) and the University of Barcelona (SERP-UB). The main topic of my thesis is the Holocene landscape evolution and human practices since the Neolithic in the Mont Lozère (French Central Massif), based on a multi-proxy study carried out in a middle mountain environment. Between 2015 and 2020 I have been postdoctoral researcher at the ArqueoUIB research team (University of the Balearic Islands) under the Juan de la Cierva (Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation) and the Vicenç Mut (Autonomous Community of the Balearic Islands) programs. During these contracts, I was focused on human-nature interactions and landscape shaping in Mallorca and Menorca during the Holocene.

I am a tenure-track assistant professor (RTD-b position) of Systematic Botany, Life Sciences Dept, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. As a palynologist, I am developing research on Holocene pollen records with special interest in the human impact on vegetation in the Mediterranean region. I obtained my B.Sc. in Sciences of Cultural Heritage in 2006, and in 2008 the M.D. in Sciences of Restoration and Conservation of Archaeological Heritage. In 2013, I received my PhD in Earth System Sciences (UNIMORE); my doctoral research focused on the dynamics of the human–environment interactions at the base of the current cultural landscapes of southern Italy. I have been and still am involved in national and international research projects: PRIN-2015 ‘SUCCESSO-TERRA: Human Societies, Climate-Environmental Changes and Exploitation /Sustainability of Human Resources in the Po Plain during the Mid-Holocene (2017-20); SELCE – SELvatici CEreali: il futuro nella risposta delle piante ai cambiamenti climatici’ (2015-17); ‘AGRESPE‐réseAu Gestion des Ressources Environnementales par les Sociétés dans les Territoires du passE’ (2011-19); Culture 2007-13 ‘PaCE-Plants and Culture’ (2007-09); ‘Metaponto project’ and ‘Villaggio protostorico di San Vincenzo-Stromboli’ (2009-onwards). I published 50 extended papers, most of them in peer-reviewed scientific journals. I am the scientific secretary of the Research Network “BRAIN – Botanical Records of Archaeobotany Italian Network”.
